From Marginalization to Meaningful Participation: Tools to Strengthen Youth Belonging

This workshop explores how group dynamics shape young people’s behaviour and pathways into, and away from, crime. Drawing on both research and practice, the session takes its starting point in different types of youth communities and how these influence belonging, participation, and risk. While most young people are part of positive and supportive communities, a smaller group become part of marginalised communities where risks can escalate. The workshop will explore how marginalised youth communities are often characterised by strong internal bonds, alternative norms, and resistance to mainstream systems and how this can both provide a sense of belonging and increase vulnerability.

 We will discuss how working with marginalised youth requires differentiated approaches that go beyond individual-focused interventions. Participants will gain insights into how professionals can better understand group dynamics and adapt their practice to support more effective crime prevention initiatives.
